‘We tried so hard to get help’: Mom of B.C. teen shares mental health struggles
Alyssa Webber says Kyle was sent home after hospital staff missed warning signs, and the family is raising awareness about youth mental health care.
Late one Thursday in September, Kyle Webber drove his black Volkswagen Golf away from his Surrey home and did not return. His family now faces an assumption of death after authorities obtained footage of him at the Port Mann Bridge.
While dealing with a mental health crisis, Webber sought care at Langley Memorial Hospital, but his mother Alyssa Webber described the experience as dismissive, citing gaps in communication and poor assessment by staff.
The family altered schedules to ensure constant supervision for their son, yet Alyssa recounted that staff ignored their examples, telling them, "Oh, no, here's some pills, and a volunteer society's going to contact you."
Fraser Health offered condolences to the family while citing patient confidentiality, and encouraged them to contact its Patient Care Quality Office for a formal review of the care provided.
Alyssa aims to shine a light on mental health gaps affecting young men, while friends established a $20,000 GoFundMe to support the family ahead of a celebration of life planned for Kyle on Nov. 18.
