Waymo Issuing Recall over Safety Concerns Involving School Buses
Waymo will update software in 2025 after videos and NHTSA found vehicles failed to stop for school buses, with 1.5 violations per week reported in Austin, officials said.
- On Dec. 5, Waymo announced it will file a voluntary software recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration early next week to fix issues with stopping at school buses, Mauricio Peña said.
- Amid videos from Austin and Atlanta, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Office of Defects Investigation reported instances of Waymo cars passing stopped school buses with stop signs and flashing lights, prompting a Preliminary Evaluation of an estimated 2,000 vehicles.
- On Dec. 1, Austin Independent School District released video after Waymo received its 20th citation and requested halted peak hours operations due to 1.5 weekly violations as of November 20.
