Waymo granted first permit to begin testing autonomous vehicles in New York City
Waymo is testing eight autonomous vehicles with safety specialists behind the wheel as it seeks regulatory changes to expand driverless services in New York City.
- On Friday, Aug. 22, New York City granted Waymo a permit to begin testing in parts of Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, with tests starting immediately and running through late September.
- Waymo previously returned to Manhattan in 2021 after it mapped streets manually, but New York state law requires a human operator behind the wheel, so Waymo is lobbying legislators while New York City set testing permits last year.
- Photographs show Waymo vehicles with rotating roof-mounted laser sensors in Greenwich Village, Chelsea, and Long Island City; Waymo says its five-city footprint includes about 1,500 vehicles and over 10 million rides.
- As part of the permit, Waymo must meet regularly with New York City Department of Transportation, share safety data, meet cybersecurity requirements, and the public cannot use driverless service during the pilot.
- Waymo is positioning itself to expand eastward to Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., while Tesla and other robotaxi competitors accelerate testing and operations.
