Region won't support approvals for new developments until more is known about water quantity concerns
The Region of Waterloo says it has confirmed there are concerns with the amount of water in high-growth areas like Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Woolwich and Wilmot. For now, the region says it won't support the approval of new developments in those areas until staff are able to figure out next steps.
Development projects face pause in Waterloo Region due to water capacity concerns
Kitchener – Waterloo Region’s limited water supply is poised to stall growth that had been anticipated to reach one million residents by 2051. Development proposals for some areas of the region may be paused until a solution can be found. The region currently draws its water from 100 wells in addition to surface water from the Grand River. Groundwater accounts for upwards of 80 per cent of the region’s drinking water supply. CTV News report
