1 Dead After Police Respond to Hostage Situation in East Vancouver
The hostage was injured and later released as British Columbia’s police watchdog reviews the shooting, officials said.
- On Monday, Vancouver Police Department officers fatally shot a suspect during a home invasion in East Vancouver, responding to reports at the 3600 block of Commercial Street around 9 p.m.
- Officers initially responded to reports of a man running through residential backyards; the suspect then gained entry to a residence and took a man hostage using a weapon.
- Although officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, they were "ultimately forced" to shoot the suspect, who died at the scene; the hostage sustained injuries but was taken to hospital and released.
- The Independent Investigations Office , British Columbia's civilian-led police watchdog, has launched an investigation to determine if officers' actions or inactions played a role in the death.
- Neighbors reported hearing several shots, with one stray bullet reportedly shattering a glass door at a nearby unit; the IIO is asking witnesses to contact the agency with information about the incident.
