U.S. Watchdog Files Complaint over Trump’s New Press Secretary’s Legal Credentials
Campaign for Accountability says records show no California license for Zacharia, who it says portrayed herself as a lawyer to bolster her credibility.
- On Wednesday, the Campaign for Accountability filed a complaint with the California State Bar against White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia, alleging she falsely identified herself as an attorney without a license.
- President Donald Trump introduced Zacharia as an attorney last Friday, yet journalists found no record of her holding a state bar license in any U.S. jurisdiction.
- According to the Campaign, Zacharia appeared as a lawyer in at least 18 Fox News appearances since March 2025 and served as general counsel for Fix California, a conservative nonprofit.
- The complaint asserts that falsely claiming to be a licensed attorney violates California Business and Professions Code Section 6126, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail or a $1,000 fine.
- While the White House maintains Zacharia possessed appropriate credentials for international work, the watchdog group requested that the State Bar refer the matter to the Ventura County District Attorney for prosecution.
