Washington nuclear facility will deploy 12 Amazon-funded SMRs
The Cascade facility will use 12 small modular reactors to generate 960 MW of carbon-free power aimed at supporting AI and digital tools, creating over 1,000 construction jobs.
- On Thursday, Amazon unveiled plans for the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility outside Richland, Washington, which will deploy 12 small modular reactors, Amazon said.
- Amazon said the energy from the facility will help power AI and other digital tools, and Kara Hurst, Amazon's chief sustainability officer, called it "a reliable source of carbon-free energy that will support our growing digital world."
- Each Xe-100 module provides 80 megawatts of electricity, Amazon said the plant’s modular layout means three 320-MW sections form a 960-MW plant, and Ben Reinke said X-energy seeks to standardize using the Texas SMR project.
- Amazon said the project will create over 1,000 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent positions as officials progress in talks with state regulators and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
- The parties aim to mobilize up to $50 billion in investments, with KHNP, Doosan, and others supporting over five gigawatts deployment while X-energy secured $500 million from Amazon last year.
