Montreal Blue-Collar Workers Issue Warning Ahead of World Cycling Championships
The union says 6,000 workers could escalate pressure if talks with the city do not speed up, citing stalled wage negotiations and outsourcing concerns.
The Montreal Blue Collar Workers Union warns of a "historic labour dispute" during the upcoming UCI Road World Championships, scheduled for September 20 to 27 in Montreal.
Since the collective agreement expired on December 31, 2024, negotiations have stalled; the union notes about ten sessions have occurred since May, yet the City remains "rigid and inflexible" on financial matters.
Union President Nicolas De Ciccio claims current offers would "impoverish" members—who have not received a raise since 2024—by about 10 per cent, and he criticized the City for outsourcing work despite higher costs.
Representing about 6,000 workers, the union demanded faster negotiations to avoid intensifying pressure tactics, but the City told CBC on Monday it would not comment on the union's position.
Organizers expect the event to draw more than 200 million television viewers and nearly 500,000 spectators, as the union denounced the awarding of private contracts for asphalt resurfacing in preparation for the competition.
