Warning as stuffed toy flagged as 'serious risk of suffocation' to young children
The 1kg toy may restrict breathing or movement in young children, and OPSS says it does not meet Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.
On Friday, the Office for Product Safety and Standards warned shoppers that the Snugly Weighted Stuffed Toy poses a serious suffocation risk to young children, as it could restrict breathing or movement.
Although marketed as a 1kg/2.2lb therapy tool for adults, marketing images for the Snugly Weighted Stuffed Toy demonstrate use by children, prompting the OPSS to flag the item's potential danger.
Regulatory assessments found the toy "does not meet the requirements of the Toys Regulations 2011," and the OPSS noted that necessary safety markings were not available in English.
Consumers are being advised to ensure the product is "kept out of reach of children" following the safety alert issued by the OPSS.
Despite safety concerns, Snugly maintains the toy is "safe for children" and recommends "following weight guidelines based on the child's age and size," creating tension with the OPSS warning.
