‘Hogwarts Legacy’ Expansion Cancelled Despite 30 Million Copies Sold
Warner Bros. leadership recently cancelled a planned expansion for the highly successful Hogwarts Legacy, developed by Avalanche Software, which would have added new storylines and been bundled with a 'Definitive Edition' slated for release this year.
The decision to scrap the expansion, which was never formally announced, stemmed from concerns that the content wouldn't justify the price tag being considered amidst ongoing restructuring and cost-cutting measures at Warner Bros. Games following sales flops and studio closures.
Hogwarts Legacy, based on the Harry Potter IP, achieved significant commercial success, selling over 34 million copies and becoming the best-selling game of 2023, even surpassing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
According to Bloomberg, interim boss JB Perrette told staff that the publisher group needed to regain its credibility, while Warner Bros. aims to double down on major franchises like Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.
Despite the cancellation of the expansion, Warner Bros. is moving forward with Hogwarts Legacy 2, currently in development at Avalanche Software, allowing the team to devote more resources to the sequel, with estimates placing its release in the 2026-2027 window.
