Warmer temps bring soaring tick populations – here’s how to stay safe from Lyme disease
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that emergency room visits due to tick bites reached their highest level since 2017 as of April 23.
More than 89,000 Lyme disease cases were reported by state health departments in 2023, the latest year with available data.
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria called Borrelia, mainly Borrelia burgdorferi, and was first identified in Connecticut in 1975.
Ticks that transmit Lyme disease are most active from April to November, and early symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue appearing within 3 to 30 days after a bite.
