New Attacks Hit Ships Near Hormuz as Trump Discusses Iran with Xi
The leaders agreed the strait should stay open as Iran and the United States remain deadlocked over sanctions, uranium and control of the waterway.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump discussed the Iran war with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, while new attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz underscored the persistent stalemate.
The United States and Israel paused their bombing campaign more than a month ago, but the blockade of Iranian ports and closure of the strait have severely disrupted global energy supplies.
India reported an attack on one of its ships off the coast of Oman, while the British maritime security agency UKMTO reported Thursday that "unauthorised personnel" boarded a vessel near Fujairah.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged China to "do what they can" to help open the strait, as diplomacy remains stalled with both nations rejecting "red lines" in peace proposals.
Iran retains more than 400 kg of near-weapons-grade uranium and missiles capable of striking neighbors, demonstrating Trump has yet to achieve his stated war aims.
