War Drives Sudanese Miners to Gold

War and the loss of livelihoods are pushing growing numbers of Sudanese people into gold mining, despite a series of pit collapses that have killed dozens of workers. According to a BBC News report, at least 83 people died when five adjoining shafts collapsed at a mine near Al-Nuhud in West Kordofan. Three days later, another collapse in Jebeit, eastern Sudan, killed 12 people.
