Doug McMillon is stepping down after 40 years and more than a decade as CEO; Furner will succeed him amid a 34% rise in retail CEO departures, data shows.

- In a CNBC interview on Tuesday, Doug McMillon, Walmart CEO , said his exit was not about confidence and he plans a break before pursuing business and philanthropy in a quieter 2026.
- The departures this year include Kroger's former CEO Rodney McMullen and Kohl's former CEO Ashley Buchanan, while Target's CEO Brian Cornell announced he will retire next year.
