Cat Matlala’s Wife to Appear in Court in Fraud Case over R1m Property Deal
Prosecutors say nearly R1.2 million was paid upfront for the lease as Matlala and three co-accused used false documents and an Eswatini identity.
- On Wednesday, The Pretoria Magistrates Court granted bail of R20,000 each to Tsakane Matala, Claudette Masethe, and Given Makofane in connection with an alleged fraudulent Waterkloof Heights lease, while Vusimuzi Cat Matala remained in custody after declining to seek bail.
- Allegations center on a January 2025 scheme where the four accused falsified documents to secure a Waterkloof Heights property lease in Pretoria, with the state alleging Vusimuzi unlawfully possessed identification between 13 and 21 January 2025 claiming association with the Eswatini Royal house.
- NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed the property rented for R95,000 monthly with nearly R1.2 million allegedly paid upfront. The four accused face two counts each of fraud, uttering and forgery, with Vusimuzi charged additionally under the Identification Act.
- Bail conditions require Tsakane, Masethe, and Makofane to report to police, surrender passports, and avoid contacting state witnesses. Prosecutors intend to oppose Vusimuzi's bail application at hearings scheduled for 14 and 15 October 2026.
- Vusimuzi remains denied bail in a separate 25-count case at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg involving attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud and money laundering linked to a R228 million contract. Prosecutors may consolidate the cases by 29 October 2026.
