Voters in Toronto, across Ontario, head to the polls for municipal elections
Mayoral races in Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa and Hamilton are among the closest contests as voters choose local leaders and trustees across the province.
- On Monday, October 26, 2026, voters across more than 400 Ontario municipalities cast ballots to elect mayors, councillors, and school trustees, with high-profile contests in Toronto, Mississauga, and Ottawa drawing particular attention.
- Provincial policy changes, including legislation granting strong mayor powers and the appointment of regional chairs in Waterloo and Niagara, significantly reshaped local governance authority ahead of the election.
- Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath lost her re-election bid to Keanin Loomis with 41.8 per cent of the vote, while Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish was defeated by Alvin Tedjo, who received roughly 74,000 votes. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow secured re-election with about 54 per cent.
- Ottawa recorded its lowest voter turnout in 23 years at just over 36 per cent, with residents presenting identification such as an Ontario driver's licence to cast ballots.
- Election results signal a major regional shakeup, with numerous incumbent defeats reshaping council composition as newly elected officials prepare to begin their term on November 15.
