Volkswagen to recall over 208,700 US vehicles over steering rack bolt defect, NHTSA says

- On Friday, Volkswagen recalled 208,724 United States vehicles—including the Atlas, Tiguan, and Audi Q3—due to a steering-rack mounting bolt that can corrode and break, potentially causing loss of steering control.
- Moisture entering the right-side mounting area causes the bolt to corrode over time, potentially leading to a fractured steering rack housing, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration .
- The recall covers 82,601 Atlas, 85,713 Tiguan, and 40,410 Audi Q3 units manufactured between 2018 and 2021. Owners may detect metallic rattling or knocking from the front axle before complete failure.
- Dealers will replace the right-side bolt free of charge with a corrosion-resistant polymer-coated version starting November 10, 2026, when owner notification letters arrive and Vehicle Identification Numbers become searchable online.
- More than 44,000 similar vehicles have been recalled in Canada for the same steering-rack defect, though Volkswagen reports no crashes, injuries, or deaths in North America related to the issue so far.
