Virginia Police Release Bodycam Footage of Fatal May 1 Shooting
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating, and officers recovered a ski mask, shell casings and a torch lighter at the scene.
On Friday, the Virginia Police Department released bodycam and dashboard camera footage of the May 1 fatal shooting of Ethan Roy Basche, 31, of Chisholm by Lt. Henry Trunk.
Officers were dispatched shortly before 8:30 a.m. on May 1 to the 300 block of Second Avenue South for reports of a man wearing a ski mask and waving what appeared to be a handgun.
Footage shows Trunk ordering Basche to raise his hands before Basche pointed a torch lighter at police; The BCA recovered the lighter, ski mask, and shell casings from the scene.
Basche was pronounced dead at a local hospital after Trunk fired shots, and the Virginia Police Department placed Trunk, a 10-year law enforcement veteran, on critical incident leave.
The BCA is investigating and will present findings to the Louis County Attorney for review to determine whether the shooting was justified or if Trunk should face criminal charges.
