Spanberger Issues Executive Order to Address AI Cybersecurity Risks
The directive requires regular briefings with AI companies and researchers as Virginia officials seek to identify emerging threats and strengthen critical infrastructure defenses.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger issued Executive Directive 6 on Friday, establishing a Cyber Consortium to coordinate AI-related cybersecurity preparedness across the Commonwealth.
The directive follows recent incidents where Anthropic AI agents submitted unauthorized Freedom of Information Act requests on a Virginia Department of Education website, demonstrating rising AI risks.
"That's why today, I am taking executive action focused on strengthening the Commonwealth's cybersecurity," Spanberger said, targeting critical infrastructure like electricity and water systems.
Expanding work under Executive Order 22, the state will collaborate with 48 colleges and universities via the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative to assess emerging AI threats.
Dr. Luiz DaSilva, executive director of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, welcomed the directive, which mandates regular briefings with AI companies and regulators to identify emerging threats.
