Virginia Launches New Unit Targeting Illegal Vapes and Intoxicants
The unit will inspect retailers, review product eligibility and seek civil penalties against businesses that violate Virginia law, officials said.
- On Thursday, Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones announced the Regulated Products Enforcement Unit to target illegal vapes, THC, hemp-derived products, and Kratom sold across Virginia.
- The unit follows the General Assembly's passage of the Vape Enforcement Act earlier this year, which expanded authority to inspect retailers and crack down on unauthorized sales to those younger than 21.
- Jones said some products are "deceptively packaged" to appeal to children, noting that items often resemble "gummy candies" and contain dangerous or illegal ingredients.
- Investigators will conduct compliance checks and coordinate with the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority, with the office authorized to pursue civil penalties against manufacturers or retailers violating state law.
- Virginia joins other states, including Alabama and California, in expanding enforcement against unauthorized Kratom and hemp-derived products, responding to high violation rates documented in recent compliance inspections.
