Virgin Galactic debuts 'Apeiron' Spaceship

The spacecraft will undergo avionics integration and flight test preparations as Virgin Galactic aims to resume commercial suborbital service.

  • On Wednesday, Oct. 28, Virgin Galactic transported its third-generation rocket ship, Apeiron, from Mesa, Ariz., to its home base at Spaceport America in New Mexico.
  • The spaceship was named Apeiron in an online contest attracting votes from more than 80 countries, drawing on design principles from SpaceShipOne, which won a $10 million X Prize two decades ago.
  • Virgin Galactic targets two launches per week with a vehicle lifetime of more than 500 missions, aiming to start commercial trips costing $750,000 by the middle of next year.
  • With Apeiron now at Spaceport America, Virgin Galactic's engineering team plans to complete avionics software integration and flight test preparations. "To our team and our astronaut community: your Spaceship has arrived," Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier said.
  • Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin venture, which sent 92 people to space, paused its suborbital program after the 17th mission in January to focus on moon missions, leaving Virgin Galactic as the sole operator.
