Policemen Injured, Vehicles Set Ablaze as Coal Mine Protest Turns Violent in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh
At least eight police officers were injured and multiple vehicles and equipment were damaged during a violent protest by villagers opposing the Gare Pelma Sector-I coal project.
- On Saturday, clashes broke out at the Jindal CHP chowk in Tamnar block, with protesters storming the Jindal Coal Handling Plant, vandalising office premises and setting fire to a police bus, jeep, and ambulance.
- Residents from 14 affected villages have been staging a sit-in at CHP chowk since December 12, opposing the December 8 public hearing at Dhaurabhatha and fearing loss of agricultural land from the Gare Pelma Sector-I coal block.
- The crowd swelled from about 300 to 1,000 and allegedly turned violent around 2.30 pm, attacking police with stones and sticks and injuring Anil Vishwakarma, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Kamla Pusam, Tamnar police station in-charge, and a constable.
- Police used lathi charges and tear gas, tightened security, halted mining operations for the day, shifted some injured to Raigarh, and made two dialogue attempts to identify responsible persons.
- SECL says the land for Amera opencast mine was acquired under the 1957 Coal Bearing Act with compensation paid, while Deepak Baij blamed the government's `stubbornness` for the clashes.
