Vinicius Jr Handed Four-Match Ban over Hair Pull Incident
The Spanish football federation split the ban into two matches for violent conduct and two for protests, leaving Real Madrid without a key forward.
- The Spanish Football Federation's disciplinary committee handed Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior a four-match suspension on Wednesday, ruling him out of upcoming league fixtures following his red card against Villarreal on October 10.
- On Saturday, October 10, referee Isidro Díaz de Mera issued a direct red card after a VAR review confirmed Vinicius pulled the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba during the 73rd minute.
- Disciplinary officials imposed a two-match ban for 'violent conduct' and added two additional games for 'protests' to the referee, according to the official disciplinary report.
- Vinicius apologized to his teammates and fans via social media; the suspension rules him out of the October 25 El Clásico against Barcelona, a critical fixture for Real Madrid's title hopes.
- Real Madrid manager José Mourinho criticized the 'shameless' timing of the announcement, questioning why authorities confirmed the four-match ban only hours before his team's Champions League match against Roma.
