Shipley: Vikings’ Quarterback Competition Shifts to Race for No. 2
Carson Wentz’s stronger preseason showing could push J.J. McCarthy off the backup spot as Minnesota finalizes its depth chart.
With Kyler Murray established as the starting quarterback, the backup position for The Vikings has become a competition between J.J. McCarthy and veteran Carson Wentz.
During the preseason opener against the New York Giants, Carson Wentz completed 9 of 14 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown, while McCarthy finished with 34 passing yards in the 13-10 victory.
NFL insider Mike Florio reported on the Aug. 17 edition of PFT Live that The Vikings encountered issues getting McCarthy to "buy in," while head coach Kevin acknowledged the backup status is "subject to change."
Chris Simms of PFT Live cautioned against declaring Carson Wentz the definitive backup, noting the team continues evaluating whether Wentz can overtake McCarthy for the QB2 spot.
The Vikings will continue their evaluation heading into the second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 22, with these final two games critical before the season opener on Sept. 13.
