Viking Therapeutics’ Obesity Drug Shows Durable Weight-Loss Benefit, Shares Jump
The company said 180 adults with obesity maintained up to 97% of prior weight loss on every-other-week dosing and up to 90% on monthly dosing.
- On Tuesday, Viking Therapeutics announced positive top-line results from its VK2735-102 maintenance study, showing patients maintained significant weight loss after transitioning to less frequent dosing regimens.
- Following an initial 21-week induction period of weekly injections, the trial transitioned participants to monthly or every-other-week doses of VK2735 to evaluate long-term weight management and treatment adherence.
- Patients switching to every-other-week dosing maintained up to 97% of weight loss, while those on monthly dosing retained up to 90% over the following 12 weeks.
- "These results are important as they provide a basis for improved dosing flexibility," said Louis Aronne, MD, FACP, former president of The Obesity Society, noting excellent tolerability with GI-related adverse event rates similar to placebo.
- Analysts expect the obesity market to reach $100 billion in annual sales by 2030, as Viking prepares to study oral maintenance dosing in an upcoming trial to expand patient options.
