The American probe Viking 1, which launched into space from the Florida Cape Canaveral spaceport on August 20, 1975, exactly 50 years ago, became the first human creation to successfully land on Mars, soft and with long-term operation - despite the fact that Soviet instruments had reached there several years earlier. Viking 1 touched down on the surface of the Red Planet on July 20, 1976.
