BBC World Service - Newshour, Hundreds Attend Minneapolis Vigil After ICE Shooting
Hundreds gathered in Chicago and other cities demanding independent investigations and transparency after ICE agents fatally shot a Minneapolis mother during an immigration operation.
- On Wednesday evening, hundreds gathered in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood for a vigil honoring 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, killed during an encounter involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis, starting around 7:30 p.m. to remember her life and call for accountability from federal authorities.
- The fatal shooting occurred Wednesday morning during a federal immigration operation; DHS said agents fired after Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis mother, threatened them, but Minneapolis leaders said she was a legal observer and the shooting was unjustified.
- Video footage shows ICE officers confronting an SUV before an agent fired at least two shots as the vehicle moved forward, then crashed, and emergency workers tried to aid the woman.
- Protests quickly spread to other cities, including Seattle, New York City, Phoenix and Dallas, where more than 100 gathered outside Dallas City Hall, while DHS described the shooting as defensive and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called it "garbage".
- The incident coincided with reports of an increased ICE presence in the region, as the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights reported at least 50 ICE agents arrived Tuesday.
