Video and satellite photos show Iran war oil spill on Persian Gulf island
Satellite images show the refinery fire still burning two days later as an oil slick wrapped around Shidvar Island, a protected wildlife refuge.
Satellite imagery from April 10 shows a fire burning at an oil refinery on Lavan Island, with an oil slick coating the shores of nearby Shidvar Island in the Persian Gulf.
Iranian media alleged the United Arab Emirates conducted the refinery attack during the war, though Emirati officials have not acknowledged involvement; the strike occurred as a United States and Israel ceasefire took effect.
Shidvar Island, an 870-hectare Ramsar Convention wetland and protected tern breeding ground, suffered severe contamination; footage from Ehsan Jalali reveals dead birds, crabs, and fish covered in oil.
Iranian officials have not acknowledged environmental damage at the refinery, even as reports indicate "oily rain" fell on Tehran following airstrikes on oil infrastructure.
Widespread environmental damage persists across the region, with attacks on Gulf Arab states and shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz exacerbating the war's ecological toll.
