Victoria Wood's Dinnerladies to take to stage opening in Manchester in January

Les Dennis will star as Stan in the first Victoria Wood Estate-commissioned stage version, which tours the UK after its Manchester opening.

  • On Monday, the Victoria Wood Estate announced a new stage adaptation of the classic sitcom Dinnerladies, with actor Les Dennis cast as maintenance man Stan. The production marks the first time the Estate has commissioned a play based on Victoria Wood's work.
  • Set in the canteen of a fictional Manchester factory, the original Dinnerladies series aired on BBC One from 1998 to 2000. The beloved sitcom followed everyday workplace dramas of staff and regulars, earning a British Comedy Award.
  • Adapted by Beth and Emma Kilcoyne and directed by Olivier Award-winning Sean Foley, the play features a story inspired by the original series. It promises to reunite audiences with classic characters including Bren, Tony, Dolly, Anita, Jean, Twinkle, and Philippa.
  • This commission follows the death of Victoria Wood in 2016 at age 62. The Victoria Wood Estate stated they are "delighted to be bringing the joy of Victoria Wood's much-loved classic dinnerladies back to the nation after more than 25 years."
  • Spanning from January to August 2027, the tour launches at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley on January 22, 2027, before visiting the Manchester Opera House. Tickets go on sale later this week.
