Veterans take flight in World War II-era biplane
The nonprofit has given more than 8,500 free flights to veterans nationwide as a thank-you for their service.
Eight veterans experienced flights in a World War II-era biplane on Thursday, thanks to the nonprofit Dream Flights. Wisconsin native and Army veteran Bernie Huizenga, 87, was the first participant.
Founder Darryl Fisher launched Dream Flights in 2011 with initial funding from Wisconsin-based Direct Supply to provide free aviation experiences honoring veterans' service. The nonprofit operates nationwide as a gratitude initiative.
"I've been in small planes but never a biplane, never an open cockpit," Huizenga said. Fisher noted the flights "invigorate" veterans, making them feel decades younger in spirit.
Operating six planes with nearly 20 pilots, Dream Flights has provided more than 8,500 flights across America. Matthew Koch of Direct Supply said the partnership "connects what we believe in" regarding seniors.
Fisher, who pilots the planes himself, said he feels lucky to "do this" every morning. The program continues its commitment to honoring veterans through these unique aviation experiences.
