Verstappen and Lawson Hit with Grid Penalties for Mexico City GP Practice Clash
Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson received one-place grid penalties for their 'clumsy' clash during FP2 at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Friday.
Verstappen attempted to overtake Lawson into Turn 12, but the pair made contact heading into Turn 13 and Turn 14 after Lawson held his ground, damaging both cars.
Stewards escalated the penalty from a formal warning to a grid drop, citing similar Free Practice incidents warned about at a Team Managers meeting earlier that day.
Verstappen called Lawson's actions 'not very smart behavior,' while both drivers admitted the contact was 'clumsy' and unnecessary, though Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane described it as largely avoidable.
Both drivers also received one penalty point from the FIA, marking Verstappen's first in a 12-month period and Lawson's fourth, reflecting stewards' effort to curb aggressive Free Practice maneuvers.
The dangerous wheel-on-wheel duel between Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson in Mexico's second training has now drawn penalties. Both pilots are moved one position backwards in the starting formation.
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc won both free practice sessions on Friday at the Formula One World Championship in Mexico. The duel between four-time world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and his former teammate Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) ended in penalties for both.
