Vermont State Senator Taken Into Custody, Accused of Domestic Assault
Police said the misdemeanor arrest followed a report of domestic assault and an investigation that found injury to a household member.
Senator Terry Williams was arrested Tuesday in Poultney and charged with domestic assault. The 74-year-old Republican, who represents Rutland County, was taken into custody following a police investigation.
According to a police affidavit, Williams hit his 47-year-old daughter in the face Monday night during a dispute about "pallets in the horse barn." Williams denied the assault, describing the scratch as an inadvertent result of a "scuffle."
Williams was held at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility on $500 bail and appeared Wednesday in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge.
Gov. Phil Scott's spokesperson, Amanda Wheeler, said the governor was "completely surprised and troubled" by the arrest. Senate Minority Leader Scott Beck stated Senate Republicans are aware of the report but will offer no further comment.
Williams serves on the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Energy and faces reelection next Tuesday, November 3, against independent challenger David Wolk for one of three Rutland County seats in the Vermont Senate.
