Fourteen media workers detained covering a pro-Maduro march and new legislature swearing-in were released except one foreign journalist deported, Venezuelan press group said.
- On Jan 5, Venezuela's press association SNTP reported that more than a dozen media workers were detained in Caracas while covering a march supporting ousted President Nicolás Maduro and the swearing-in of the new legislature.
- Following a reported U.S. operation that detained Mr Maduro overnight, gunfire was heard near the presidential palace as Delcy Rodríguez, vice-president, took interim leadership Monday.
- SNTP said that those detained included 11 people working with international media outlets and one person with a national publication, while The Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, CNN and Reuters did not immediately respond.
- SNTP later said all 14 detained media workers were released, though one foreign journalist was deported, while China's foreign ministry said on Tuesday its reporters were safe.
- Venezuela's information ministry and Ministry of Communications did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while the detentions coincided with the deposed leader's New York court appearance on Jan 5, adding an international diplomatic/legal dimension.
