Vedanta group announces Rs 1 lakh crore investment drive in Odisha; targets 50,000 jobs

- On Saturday, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal announced a Rs 1 lakh crore investment plan for Odisha while seeking immediate reopening of the Niyamgiri bauxite reserves during discussions with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
- The Niyamgiri bauxite reserves have remained closed for nearly 13 years following 2013 Gram Sabha decisions that rejected mining, based on a Supreme Court ruling protecting the rights of the Dongria Kondh, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group.
- Agarwal plans to expand operations in Jharsuguda with a 2 million-tonne plant creating around 50,000 jobs, while establishing new alumina refineries in Dhenkanal and Rayagada to strengthen the company's presence across the aluminium value chain.
- "If this government keeps cooperating like this, the work will move forward," Agarwal said, emphasizing that project completion depends on immediate land allotment and government clearances.
- Beyond mining expansion, the group aims to boost downstream industries and build social infrastructure, including a large hospital in Kalahandi, to integrate tribal communities and accelerate industrialization across the state.
