Vatican issues final warning to breakaway traditionalist group attached to the old Latin Mass
The warning targets four planned consecrations and says the breakaway group would face automatic excommunication if it goes ahead.
On Wednesday, the Vatican issued a final warning to the Society of St. Pius X, stating that planned July 1 bishop consecrations without papal consent constitute a schismatic act incurring automatic excommunication.
SSPX superior Rev. Davide Pagliarani announced earlier this year that new bishops are necessary, arguing the society's two remaining aging bishops can no longer minister to its global reality.
The group first broke with Rome in 1988 after Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre consecrated bishops without consent; today it counts 733 priests and 264 seminarians, functioning as a parallel Catholic Church.
Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández stated Pope Leo XIV is praying for enlightenment, hoping SSPX leaders "may reconsider the extremely grave decision they have made" to prevent schism.
These planned consecrations represent the first tangible crisis for Pope Leo, potentially deepening divisions with traditionalist Catholics who remain loyal to Rome yet sympathize with the society's plight.
