Vatican foreign minister, in Moscow, says Ukraine war must end
The first Vatican-Russia face-to-face talks in five years focused on ending the war and expanding humanitarian cooperation for children.

- Throughout the 4-1/2 year Russia-Ukraine war, the Vatican has sought to "continue to provide strong spiritual, diplomatic, and humanitarian support by contributing to and offering a space for dialogue."
- Speaking alongside Lavrov, Gallagher argued it is "urgent and necessary to end and to look beyond the conflict," and both officials agreed to cooperate on humanitarian matters, specifically caring for children impacted by the war.
- Beyond government talks, Gallagher scheduled meetings with Metropolitan Anthony and foreign-policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, reinforcing the Holy See's determination to maintain dialogue during difficult international relations.
- Before returning to Rome on August 28, Gallagher will meet local clergy and celebrate Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A senior Vatican official urged an end to the Ukraine war after meeting in Moscow on Tuesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the first in-person talks between Vatican and Russian officials in five years.
