Vatican claims a Holy Year success with 33 million pilgrims
The 2025 Jubilee drew over 33 million pilgrims from 185 countries, surpassing forecasts and prompting €4 billion in public works to modernize Rome, Vatican officials said.
- The Vatican announced on Monday that it reported 33,475,369 pilgrims for the 2025 Holy Year, with Pope Leo XIV set to close it on Jan 6 in St. Peter's Basilica.
- The Holy Year is a centuries-old tradition that occurs roughly every 25 years as pilgrim jubilees to visit saints' tombs and receive indulgences, with participation rising after Pope Francis' April 2025 death and Pope Leo XIV's election, the Vatican said.
- The Vatican said it estimated the total using official registrations, volunteer crowd counters, and closed-circuit television at St. Peter's Basilica, which recorded around 25,000 to 30,000 daily crossings, acknowledging the estimate could include double counting.
- For Rome, the Jubilee unlocked about €4 billion in public funds, and Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said the Jubilee transformed the city despite resident frustration and rental market strains.
- Historically, Jubilees have driven major public works, with hundreds of Jubilee projects continuing in Rome beyond the Holy Year's end and a 2033 special Jubilee planned, the Vatican said.
