Vancouver police officer charged with fraud, theft and breach of trust
Police say a 2.5-year covert investigation led to four fraud counts, four theft counts and a breach-of-trust charge against the veteran detective.
On Thursday, Vancouver Police detective and KidsPlay Foundation CEO Kal Dosanjh was arrested and charged with four counts of fraud, four counts of theft over $5,000, and breach of trust, alongside co-accused Sarabjit Singh Gill.
A veteran officer with over 25 years in the Vancouver Police Department, Dosanjh founded the Surrey-based KidsPlay Foundation in 2015 to steer youth away from gangs, drugs, and violence.
Vancouver Police launched a "covert investigation" lasting about 2.5 years, culminating in Thursday's arrest and the seizure of boxes of documents from Dosanjh's residence listed in court records.
Alliance Lawyers issued a statement on Dosanjh's behalf late Thursday, asserting he "has committed no crime and is innocent of any wrongdoing" as the Vancouver Police Department prepares Friday's news conference.
Court records allege offenses occurred between 2017 and 2025, a period during which the Surrey-based KidsPlay Foundation expanded youth programs across Canada, India, Colombia, and Uganda.
