Man Extradited From Mexico to Vancouver in 1996 Murder of Muriel Lindsay
Police say the 68-year-old suspect was identified as a person of interest in 2015 and extradited after years of challenges.
- On Thursday, Vancouver police announced Juan Manuel Rueda Salud has been charged with second-degree murder in the 1996 death of Muriel Lindsay, closing a cold case dating back three decades.
- Lindsay was found beaten to death in her home on February 16, 1996; investigators state Rueda Salud lived in the same building and fled to Mexico about a month later.
- Vancouver police Detective Ryan Smith, who spent 12 years on the case, identified Rueda Salud as a person-of-interest and located him in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2015, citing "significant challenges" in the arrest.
- Rueda Salud was escorted by officers from Mexico to Vancouver on Wednesday, where he remains in custody after formal charges in 2024 and arrest in January 2025.
- Smith thanked Mexican and other law enforcement authorities for their assistance as the case moves before the courts, noting that a formal extradition process with Mexico was only recently established.
