Valkyries star Gabby Williams counts possessions, keeps track of everything to lead late in games
Williams tallied 26 points and sealed the 68-64 victory with two late free throws for a 1-0 series lead, according to official game statistics.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Golden State Valkyries secured a 68-64 victory over the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals at Chase Center. All-Star forward Gabby Williams led with 26 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Late in games, Williams manages pressure by counting possessions and points to determine the most timely moments to attack. She has raised her level of play throughout the postseason, emerging as the Valkyries' catalyst with 22.7 points per game during the playoffs.
Despite shooting just 32.1% from the field, Williams was the only Valkyries player in double figures. She sealed the narrow victory with two free throws in the fourth quarter, putting the contest out of reach for the Dream.
Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko acknowledged the hostile environment at Chase Center, where the Dream shot 2 for 19 in the fourth quarter. He plans to challenge his players to communicate better and avoid breakdowns in future games.
Heading into Game 2 on Monday, Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase has challenged her team to improve. While Golden State leads the best-of-seven series 1-0, Nakase emphasized that performance must be better to maintain their advantage.
