Vaccination does not alter post-COVID smell and taste loss

  • An international team led by Daniel Hwang from The University of Queensland found that COVID-19 vaccination typically does not change persistent smell or taste problems, according to research published in Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology.
  • Following anecdotal reports on Facebook, researchers investigated whether COVID-19 vaccination influences persistent sensory changes after initial infection. The research was sparked by accounts shared in a support group for people experiencing loss of smell and taste.
  • Researchers conducted a multilingual survey of 1,352 vaccinated participants from 52 countries between May 2022 and August 2023. For more than 90% of study participants, smell and taste remained unchanged after receiving their COVID-19 vaccination.
  • The findings provide reassurance that vaccination typically does not worsen existing symptoms. However, Hwang noted the observational study design prevents researchers from confirming that vaccination caused the rare improvements some participants reported.
  • Separate research from Colorado Anschutz identified reduced levels of the protein PLC inside taste cells, offering measurable biological evidence that may explain why some patients experience persistent taste loss long after initial infection.
