UUP: Jon Burrows looks set to become next leader
- Just hours before nominations close on Thursday, Deputy Leader Robbie Butler ruled himself out of the Ulster Unionist Party leadership contest, leaving Jon Burrows as the sole declared candidate.
- Mr Butler said he had support to stand but found many in the party favour a different leadership style and new focus, and he will continue engaging while committed as Lagan Valley MLA.
- Jon Burrows, North Antrim MLA and former senior police officer, was co-opted to replace Colin Crawford and announced his leadership bid at Stormont alongside Diana Armstrong last week.
- The party's extraordinary general meeting on January 31 will ratify a leadership succession, making Jon Burrows the fifth uncontested UUP leader if approved, with Mike Nesbitt remaining in charge until then.
- To force a contest, Prospective candidates for UUP leader must secure 35 signatures from nine constituency associations, and Burrows had previously said he would like to see a contest.
