9 Students Appear in Court over Kenya School Arson that Killed 16 Girls
Nine accused students appeared in court as investigators said CCTV showed the dormitory fire was started intentionally and left 79 wounded.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, nine students appeared at Naivasha Law Courts in Nakuru to face accusations regarding an arson attack at Utumishi Girls Academy that killed 16 girls.
CCTV footage obtained from Utumishi Girls School shows six students ignited a mattress at the dormitory exit on May 28; investigators stated the school matron failed to open an emergency door, trapping occupants.
The blaze killed 16 students and left 79 wounded, with authorities currently using DNA testing to identify victims charred beyond recognition; results are expected Wednesday.
Investigators have requested more time to probe the deadly fire, and the High Court in Naivasha will issue a ruling Wednesday on detaining the students for one month pending investigations.
School fires remain frequent in Kenya, where the Kenya Red Cross has responded to 37 incidents this year alone; five more have occurred since this tragedy.
