USF to Honor Murdered Students with Posthumous Doctoral Degrees
USF will honor the two 27-year-old doctoral students with a moment of silence and empty chairs during spring 2026 graduation ceremonies.
The University of South Florida will award posthumous doctoral degrees to Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy, two 27-year-old doctoral students killed in April, School President Moez Limayem announced.
Hisham Abugharbieh, a 26-year-old roommate of Limon, faces two counts of premeditated murder; authorities reported the victims were fatally stabbed in Tampa last month.
Zamil's body was recovered in "heavy-duty utility trash bags" on the Howard Frankland Bridge, and Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister confirmed remains found among the mangroves were Nahida.
During the doctoral degree ceremony on Friday morning, two empty chairs with regalia will be placed on the arena floor, and moments of silence will be held to honor the students.
Approximately 8,000 students will receive degrees during spring 2026 ceremonies between Thursday and Sunday, including 353 doctoral degrees, 1,360 master's, and 6,371 bachelor's degrees.
