U.S. trips to Canada rise in October for first time in eight months: StatCan
U.S. visits to Canada rose 3% after eight months of decline while Canadian trips to the U.S. fell 26%, amid political tension and a weak loonie, Statistics Canada said.
- Statistics Canada found on Dec. 22, 2025 that trips by U.S. residents to Canada rose for the first time in eight months, totaling 1,814,406, up three per cent from last year.
- Amra Durakovic said political and currency factors, including Trump's tariffs and the loonie trading around 72 cents US, discourage travel, creating stress for Canadians, she said.
- Statistics Canada found in October that Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. totalled 2,336,872, down 26.3 per cent from 3,170,986, with car return trips dropping 30.2 per cent to 1.6 million and return trips by air falling 15.1 per cent.
- Overseas arrivals rose, with 590,696 in October, up 11.7 per cent, and Canadian residents returning from overseas reached 998,197, according to The Canadian Press.
- Airlines expanded routes to other regions as Air Canada and WestJet grew services to Europe, South America and Asia while Canadians chose farther destinations.
