US Southern Command stands up autonomous unit

The new unit will link autonomous platforms to missions against narcoterrorist and cartel networks and disaster response, SOUTHCOM said.

  • On Tuesday, SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis Donovan announced the establishment of the SOUTHCOM Autonomous Warfare Command , a new unit designed to integrate unmanned systems and drones into regional operations.
  • Supporting President Donald Trump's national security objectives, the command will leverage autonomous technology to 'counter threats across domains' and maintain operational dominance in the Western Hemisphere.
  • SAWC will collaborate with the Department of Defense's Defense Autonomous Warfare Group to deploy platforms for intelligence gathering, supply drops, or delivering munitions.
  • This unit continues a trend of increased American presence in Latin America, following the activation of Space Forces Southern and operations involving Venezuelan drug cartels.
  • Future missions will focus on 'degrading' narcoterrorist networks and disaster response, mirroring a recent task force established by U.S. Central Command for rapid drone deployment.
