Hegseth Looks to Remake the Military, From Generals to Drones
The plan would create a new drone warfare command, add a 120-day future warfare study and cut another 10% of top officers by year-end.
- On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a new drone combatant command, plans for a military base housing up to 25,000 troops, and a 20% reduction in general officer ranks during a 'State of the Force' address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
- Hegseth justified the 20% reduction in top officers as 'accountability,' arguing the military was too focused on leftist 'woke' ideas. Since early last year, the Trump administration has removed numerous senior personnel, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
- The Pentagon chief introduced Autonomous Warfare Command, or AUTOWARCOM, to integrate robotic capabilities across the joint force. He also touted efforts to monitor testosterone levels and implement fitness standards requiring only a stopwatch and clipboard for troops at every level.
- Democratic Senator Mark Kelly criticized the officer cuts as a 'purge,' alleging Hegseth has 'a deep-seated grievance about leadership in the military.' Republican Senator Mike Rounds said he wanted to evaluate the reasoning, stating 'there may be some validity to it, but I want to see it first.'
- To prepare for future warfare, Hegseth unveiled Project Meridian, a 120-day study led by Elon Musk, Newt Gingrich, and Palmer Luckey of Anduril Industries. The task force will focus on fielding systems designed to dominate 'any future battlefield, from under the Earth to beyond the moon.
