U.S. says it struck Iranian drone and radar sites as Iran claims retaliation with air base attack
CENTCOM said the strikes destroyed air defenses, a ground control station and two attack drones that threatened ships in regional waters.
The United States military launched targeted airstrikes over the weekend against Iranian radar and drone control installations on Qeshm Island and near Goruk.
The precision strikes were carried out by American fighter aircraft in direct retaliation for Tehran shooting down a U.S. MQ-1 Predator drone over international waters.
Following the American attacks, Kuwaiti air defense systems activated nationwide to intercept incoming missile and drone salvos, prompting widespread air raid sirens and emergency alerts for residents to seek shelter.
The sharp military escalation has severely strained the fragility of a weekslong ceasefire as American and Iranian officials simultaneously attempt to negotiate a diplomatic deal to end the war.
The ongoing hostility continues to threaten global energy security, as Iran maintains a tight blockade on the Strait of Hormuz where a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas supply is traded.
