US says aim in Iran is to restore things back to way they were before Trump’s war
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced "Project Freedom," a new operation replacing "Epic Fury" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the initial mission paused less than 48 hours after launch.
Prior to military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran, the Strait of Hormuz was open; Tehran closed the shipping lane in retaliation, prompting the United States to blockade Iranian ports.
Project Freedom involves around 15,000 military personnel, 100 aircraft, and Navy Destroyers, with Rubio stating the mission aims to rescue 23,000 people from 87 countries trapped in the Gulf.
President Trump paused the initiative to allow settlement talks while maintaining a blockade of Iranian ports, claiming the United States holds "all the cards" in the conflict.
Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth recently dismissed European efforts to secure the strait as "silly," while critics note the administration pivots to restore the status quo without achieving regime change or ending Iran's missile program.
