Waymo to Begin Testing Autonomous Vehicles in Munich
Waymo will use trained specialists to map local streets and test software as it prepares to open commercial rides by late 2027.
- Waymo co-chief executive Tekedra Mawakana confirmed the company will begin laying the groundwork for autonomous ride-hailing in Munich in the coming weeks, targeting a public commercial service launch toward the end of 2027.
- Germany passed a framework for commercial Level 4 vehicles in 2021, though no domestic company has deployed a driverless fleet at scale; Florian Herrmann of the Bavarian State Chancellery promised to "cut red tape and remove regulatory barriers" to accelerate deployment.
